What does Upscaling mean?
Upscaling means we take your video and convert it from lower resolutions, like 480p or 720p, and upscale them to HD resolutions like 1080p or 4k. For photos it means we can make them larger while preserving detail.
Does this mean your analog video taken in 1991 is going to be super crisp high definition? Or that your great grandfather's photos are going to look like they were taken with todays cameras? Not exactly.
With todays technology, turning home videos shot on cassette tapes to 4k cinematic quality is impossible. Mostly because the input file you will be providing doesn't contain enough detail to scale the media from the smaller resolution to the larger. But we are getting closer...
That's where AI comes in. Artificial Intelligence is now allowing us to do a few things:

Frame Interpolation - This is when AI takes a frame from your video and a frame that follows it and creates a whole new frame that fits in between. By inserting this frame that the AI drew, the transition between frames becomes less abrupt, ultimately creating a smoother video.

Deinterlacing - This is where the horizontal lines on your old home videos get corrected, leaving a much more visually appealing video.

Face Identification and Enhancement - AI can detect faces and intelligently apply photo enhancing processes to make the faces more clear.
Here are some close up examples of an analogue home video shot in 1991 (and you thought our example above was arbitrary!). We enhanced and upscaled these 2 frames to remove the horizontal lines. The overall images becomes clearer and edges become sharper. Now imagine your entire video with this correction!
The more detail in the original video or photo the better the result.
